Meeting Speaker

Show your vocal verve!

Every speaker is a role model and club members learn from one another’s speeches. Prepare and rehearse to ensure you present the best speech possible. Don’t insult your fellow club members by delivering a poorly prepared speech. However, it’s also true that no speech is perfect. So, get out there and try! Here’s what to do:

• Check your club’s meeting schedule regularly
• If you don’t write your own speech introduction, make sure the Toastmaster of the meeting prepares a good one for you.
• Several days before the meeting, ask the general evaluator for your evaluator’s name.
• You should arrive at the meeting early
• During the meeting, give your full attention to the speakers at the lectern. 
• After the meeting, reclaim your manual from your evaluator.
• Finally, have the vice president education (VPE) initial the Project Completion Record in the back of your manual.

Ah-Counter

The purpose of the Ah-Counter is to note any word or sound used as a crutch by anyone who speaks during the meeting. Words may be inappropriate interjections, such as and, well, but, so and you know. Sounds may be ah, um or er. You should also note when a speaker repeats a word or phrase such as “I, I” or “This means, this means.” These words and sounds can be annoying to listeners. The Ah-Counter role is an excellent opportunity to practice your listening skills.

The articulate ad-libber

Table Topics continues a long-standing Toastmasters tradition – every member speaks at a meeting. But it’s about more than just carrying on an anxiety-ridden tradition. Table Topics is about developing your ability to organize your thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic.

Table Topics usually begins after the prepared speech presentations. The Toastmaster of the meeting will introduce the Topicsmaster who will walk to the lectern and assume control of the meeting. The Topicsmaster will give a brief description of the purpose of Table Topics and mention if the topics will carry a theme.

The Topicsmaster will state the question or topic briefly and then call on a respondent. Each speaker receives a different topic or question and participants are called on at random.

When you’re asked to respond to a topic, stand next to your chair and give your response. Your response should last one to two minutes.

 Timer

• Before the meeting, contact the Toastmaster and general evaluator to confirm which members are scheduled program participants. Then contact each speaker to confirm the time they’ll need for their prepared speech. 
• You’ll also need to write an explanation of your duties, emphasizing timing rules and how timing signals will be given. For the benefit of guests and new members, be sure to use the clearest possible language and rehearse your presentation. 
• On meeting day, retrieve the timing equipment from the sergeant at arms. Be sure you understand how to operate the stopwatch and signal device, make certain the timing equipment works and sit where the signal device can be seen by all. 
• The Toastmaster of the meeting will usually call on you to explain the timing rules and demonstrate the signal device. Stand by your chair to do so and then be seated. 
• Throughout the meeting, listen carefully to each program participant and signal them. Generally Table Topics speakers should be +/- 15 seconds of allowed time; prepared speakers must be +/- 30 seconds. However, these times may vary from club to club. In addition, signal the chairman, Toastmaster and Topicsmaster with red when they have reached their allotted or agreed-upon time. Use the timer’s report or a blank piece of paper to record each participant’s name and time used. 
• When you’re called to report by the Topicsmaster, Toastmaster or general evaluator, stand by your chair, announce the speaker’s name and the time taken. Mention those members who are eligible for awards if your club issues awards. 
• After the meeting, return the stopwatch and timing signal device to the sergeant at arms. Give the completed timer’s report to the secretary so he or she can record it in the minutes (if this is done in your club).

Toastmaster

You are the emcee.

The Toastmaster is a meeting’s director and host. You won’t usually be assigned this role until you are thoroughly familiar with the club and its procedures. If your club’s customs vary from those described here, ask your mentor or the club vice president education (VPE) for pointers well before the meeting.

Grammarian

The syntax sentinel One benefit of Toastmasters is that it helps people improve their grammar and word use. Being grammarian also provides an exercise in expanding listening skills. You have several responsibilities: to introduce new words to members, to comment on language usage during the course of the meeting, and to provide examples of eloquence.

“The joint meeting on May 2 was of course the highlight of the trip. We were surprised when we knew that the meeting was going to be held in Venetian, a fancy hotel. And we were even more surprised to find that the venue turned out to be a professional conference room.
  The meeting itself was also impressive. Speakers’ and evaluators’ beautiful accent and excellent speech gave us a great opportunity to enjoy and learn. I can still remember how the speakers spoke with confidence. I can still remember how the evaluators evaluated in a very professional way. I can still remember how Herbert presented a wonderful GE, and how Talis gave us a useful workshop.
  However, it would be more interesting if there were more roles in the meeting. I was a little surprised when I found that ah-counter and grammarian were missing. Besides, since the venue was somehow difficult to find, I suggest having a roll call at the beginning of the meeting in order to remind every chairman to make sure of the presence of all the club members.
  Regardless of that, the meeting was a great success! Thanks a lot for your reception! I am looking forward to the coming joint activities.

It was soooo nice to meet you and thank you very much for arranging everything so perfectly for us! Your club was brilliant and the joint-meeting couldn’t be more successful! I as well as my fellow club-mates have enjoyed ourselves so much during the meeting as well as the 3-day tour in Macau. It has really been a fruitful trip as we not only learnt so much but also made so many good friends! 

The whole meeting was filled with a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, which made me feel very relaxed on the stage, like talking to some old friends. The barbeque and ice-breaking games on the night before certainly contributed a great deal to achieving that closeness between everyone. (Therefore thank you again for your excellent arrangements!!) The roles were reasonably allocated which well enabled students from different schools to share different thoughts. Evaluations were very helpful and it could be better if more feedbacks from the audience had been collected for each speaker for improvements. The general evaluation and the workshop were so instructive as well as humorous. I had a great fun while learnt a lot and I’m sure that everyone else felt the same!“

Delightfully, we have invited toastmasters from Xiamen University, Sun Yat-Sen University and Chinese University of Hong Kong to attend our Intercollegiate Joint Meeting on May 2, at Lecture Hall, Venetian, Macau. The meeting theme is Why me, why this, why now.

Toastmaster Albert Zhang, University of Macau started meeting professionally. After opening remark by Fatima, Macau Area Governor, he invited representatives from each university to make a statement. Tracy, University of Macau welcomed everyone coming to attend this meeting. Alex, Xiamen University shared his BBQ experiences on May 1, at Bamboo Bay Beach. Lizzie, Chinese University of Hong Kong expressed her thanks. Rocky, Sun Yat-Sen University talked about our deep relationships in previous lives.

In the prepared speech section, 6 wonderful speakers gave us distinctive speeches with six different styles. Among them, The Best Prepared Speech Speaker, Tina, Chinese University of Hong Kong, introduced us her do re me life with piano and chorus.  Her beautiful voice really impressed everyone present greatly.

Tracy prepared an interesting and challengeable table topic section. Participants were required to pick out a person name and an event form two groups of paper slips, and made an impromptu speech, according to the topic chose. After vote, Daniela, Sun Yat-Sen University and Chinese University, became The Best Table Topic Speaker.

George Fu, Sun Yat-Sen University gave us a demo individual evaluation, and also be elected as The Best Individual Evaluator. He expressed his opinions vividly, using many body languages. He showed us how to make most use of stage to impress audiences.

The most wonderful section of this meeting is Herbert Lee’s general evaluation. He expressed his opinions and evaluated each table topic speaker by a long poetry. Everybody enjoyed his evaluations.

Talis Wong from Hong Kong brought us a valuable workshop about sound bite. He taught us the importance and applications of sound bite, as well as how to use it in public speaking. Those materials were meaningful and practical.

Finally, this fantastic joint meeting ended at 18:10, May 2. Each speaker showed us their abilities, and also trained their confidence. We learned and obtained a lot from each other, not only public speaking skills, also precious friendship.

Workshop Presentation: SOUNDBITES_2010_by_Talis_Wong

This join meeting with Cotai is a Speakerthon.

A ” Speakerthon” is also known as “Marathon Speaking session”. As the name implies, Speakerthon is a meeting devoted to speeches and evaluation only. The usual table topics session is sacrificed.

First and ever, UMAC produced the first CC, Turner Le, who finished 10 projects from Competent Communication Manual. Before receiving the award certificate from Toastmasters International HQ, he received a CC pin from Herbert.

At the same time, Arian & Charlene had done their first projects, The Ice Breaker, and received the Icebreaker Award which represented their first step in achieving the goal as Distinguished Toastmaster DTM.

      There is nothing more pleased to me than to see all of you attend our meeting last week! We had an enjoyable time with our special guests from Macau University in ¨TM CASINO〃. For those who didnˇt join our meeting last week, please donˇt miss our meeting this week! We will hold the C1 speech contest and there will be some special sessions!

      Firstly, itˇs our pleasure to invite four beautiful members from Macau University. Thanks to their attendance, our meeting became more interesting and exciting! Yavine Luo and Tracy Qu are our language and general evaluators respectively. Their opinions and advices help us make progress in delivering speeches and running the whole meeting. Also, we invite our dear English teacher, Teresa Kuo, as one of our individual evaluators. Her vivid and fluent evaluation left deep impression on our mind!

   
      Last but not the least, our shining star, Tho, brought us the interesting table topic session. He combined the games in casion with questions to enrich the session. Moreover, the baking session master, Sandy Huang, also warmed us up before the formal activities. Donˇt forget our toastmaster of the evening, Wen and Ping, their creative way of hosting and their ¨special〃 attire created the atmosphere in casino!
